The Women’s Events Committee had their ‘Take Back the Night’ event September 17th in London from 5:30-8:30 p.m. ‘Take Back the Night’ is an internationally held rally to call for action and celebrate ending violence against women. The gathering began in Victoria Park where DJ Shilo Silver performed. There was also opportunity to meet with various community booths to get information concerning ongoing causes, such as Women in Politics and Queerspace London. Before the march, the stage was open to talks from the Native Women’s Association as well as the Women’s Events Committee.
People of all ages took part in the march, which began down Central Avenue near Richmond, with the women’s’ motorcycle group the Iron Sirens, who have been part of the rally for many years. There was lots of singing, drums and chants along the protest march, along with people sharing their past experiences. As a reason for the protest was to show women’s need to safely walk the streets of London alone, male and male-identified allies stood at Wellington and Dundas to show their support to this cause.
