Next week, on Thursday March 16th, is the very green day that is known as St. Patrick’s Day. Although this day is supposed to be an exciting day for all, its important to keep yourself safe while having fun. Fanshawe College will be hosting their own events that day, anything from scavenger hunts to photos from the photo booth.
Sexual assault prevention officer, Leah Marshall, explains what you can expect. “All of the events are in Forewell Hall. There will be a scavenger hunt from 12pm-2pm. Students can win St Patricks day swag with consent culture messaging and taxi gift cards to help students get home safe.” There will also be some food and beverages handed out that evening, which is all geared towards a St. Patrick’s Day theme. “We will also be serving mocktails and water bottles with a checklist that show you everything you need to do to be safe that day. There will be live celtic music and Outback Shack will be serving irish nachos.”
Fanshawe College is also working hard to turn around the meaning of St. Patricks Day and the “kiss me I’m Irish” message it brings. “We are taking traditional messaging that is seen on t-shirts around St. Patrick’s Day, messaging that fits within a Rape Culture and changing it to better reflect the culture of the College, a Culture of Consent! No matter how you celebrate this day everyone deserves to feel safe and have fun! Ending Sexual Violence on Campus is everyone’s responsibility, we all have a role to play to ensure our campus and our peers are safe.”
