According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, 1 in 5 children have a mental illness. St Thomas author Kristin Legault has struggled with mental illness her whole life. She wrote a series of children books about mental illness to raise awareness and help others like herself.
In the series, Legault describes different mental illnesses in the perspective of a child.For example, she explains the symptoms of depression in “Zoey Has Very Glum Days.” She hopes that her books will teach children that mental illness is like any other illness like a cold or a flu and should be treated the same.
“The Children’s Mental Health Series” will be available for purchase in local bookstores this fall.
