For the upcoming weekend, the dinner menu for most families is turkey.
For Mike Oegema, the owner of Oegema Turkey Farms and the Turkey Shoppe, this is only a warm up for Christmas “this is a peak time for us, we will probably 1,200 to 1,300 fresh birds, 2-300 frozen birds but for the weeks leading up to Christmas, we will sell around 1,800 fresh birds and a lot more frozen birds.”
Oegema Farms is the home to about 65,000 turkeys a year with getting a new flock of roughly 10,000 birds every month.
To find that perfect bird for dinner Oegema says “the rule of thumb that we suggest is 1 pound of turkey for each person eating that night and also as the turkey has the Canada grade A sticker on it, you can’t really go wrong”
