With an 8 and 1 record, the Fanshawe Falcon’s men’s volleyball team sits atop of the Western Conference tied along with the Mohawk Mountaineers.
For the Falcons, they are coming off a third place title at the CCAA national tournament last season and the expectations are much higher this season with Fanshawe College hosting the nationals in March. For head coach, Patrick Johnston, he says the team had a shaky start in the early part of the season but bounced back well, ” Considering we had a shaky start, the guys rebounded back well with 6 and 7 good wins which according to script was the right way.”
Coach Johnston says for next half of the season if their goals are not accomplished the squad will be pretty disappointed with them selves, ” The guys and the coaching staff are all on the same page that if they don’t bring back both OCAA and CCAA championships, we will be disappointed with the season.”
One player on the team that has most impressed Coach Johnston has been James Jackson,” He has had the biggest break out in the first half. Even though he was a dominant force last season, he has been asked to carry more of the weight this year and offensively he has been performing at the level we need him to win a national championship.”
Fanshawe’s next match is when they travel to Ancaster next Wednesday to take on the Redeemer Royals before going on a road trip to the states to take on american teams and gain more experience.
