The South Lions have won back-to-back Senior WOSSAA Football championships. The Lions defeated the CCH Crusaders 14-1 in a cold match at TD Stadium. In the 2nd quarter it was scoreless until with 2:38 left, quarterback Ethan Martin found Noah Johns in the end zone for a 12 yard pass to put the Lions up 7-0 after the extra point.
The Crusaders would get their lone point on a rouge after the Lions failed to get out of their end zone on a punt return. With 2:09 left in the fourth quarter, Martin ran the football into the end zone after a 20 yard QB sneak to finish the scoring for the Lions.
South Head Coach Mike Stenning liked what he saw from their opponents.
“This is what High School Football is all about, I love these games. What a formidable opponent, they had a great game plan this week. They came out and took it to us but we were able to weather the storm.”
Ethan Martin was named MVP of the game and Stenning had nothing but praise for him.
“You can’t say enough about him. We used him on offence and defence. He was begging to get on the field at anytime that he could. We have a lot of good players on this team and a lot of them are hurt and we needed Ethan to step up big.”
Martin says he has to make a decision on whether he wants to return for his 5th year or to accept an offer from Yale, Harvard or Brown University.
The Lions advance to the Western Bowl in Hamilton where they will take on Windsor Champions Holy Names at 4 P.M on Tuesday.
