Students and faculty gathered inside the Student Lounge in the UCC at Western to celebrate the Mustangs’ 6 athletic teams that won Canadian National Championships.
The undefeated Vanier Cup Champions football team was 1 of the 6 recognized, which saw Coach Greg Marshall wins his first title as a coach.
“I am so proud of them, everywhere we went I heard comments from people of how well mannered and respectful your boys were. As a coach these guys are like my sons, it makes me very proud”.
There was a certain win when Marshall felt they could win the Canadian title.
“I think the first playoff game against Guelph (OUA Semi-Final) where we handled them (66-12).We never looked too far down the road, I said from the first meeting after the (regular) season, all we have to do to win the Vanier Cup is to beat Guelph.”
The 10 consecutive Champion cheerleading team, women’s lacrosse and rowing (5 consecutive Champions) and the men’s tennis team were honoured at the ceremony.
The end of the celebration was marked by purple confetti than the teams traveled to City Hall by bus with a police escort to be congratulated by Mayor Matt Brown.
