Concussions have become one of the biggest things in sports, with 3-4 million people getting at least one concussion a year. The sport that has the most concussions? Football.
With there being so much head contact in sports these days, whether it be hockey, football or even mixed martial arts, should there be a support system in place if they need concussion treatment after their career? Fanshawe student Ryan Wall thinks so.
“One of the things is after you get a concussion, you don’t want to let the team down and keep playing. I think there needs to be a program put in place for players to take a break”.
How do you know if you have a concussion? Some symptoms include a headache, confusion or dizziness, your ears may consistently ring and nausea.
It is very important if you think that you have a concussion to stop playing any sport or activity and see a doctor.
How can there be less concussions in sports? Perhaps leagues should put in a strict suspension, upwards of 20 games in a season if they injure a player severely, and put a big fine on top of that.
There are different ways to get a concussion. The most common is a blow to the head, but that isn’t the only way. They can occur in car accidents, whiplash, being unconscious or simply falling on the ground.
Jaylan Lindstrom, a Fanshawe Business student says his memory was affected after he got his concussion.
“Sometimes I will space out. Only a little bit of memory affection, it’s not a long term effect, it has only been the first month, give it another month and we will see what the permanent effects will be.”
