When talking about phones in the classroom there is still a lot of negativity behind it because of how distracting they can be.
Say your a teacher who hates cell phones in classes. A company called Yondr has created a phone case that uses similar technology as security tags on clothing to lock phones in the cases. This would allow students to hang onto their phones while not allowing access to them until the teacher allows it or when class is over.
On the other side of things cell phones can be used in positive ways. Peter Cassidy Principal of John Paul the second Catholic Secondary School says every one has one so there it is hard to get rid of them totally.
” seemingly every kid has got one, and so its a convenient use of technology. we would love to provide every kid with a laptop or with access to technology, but the phones we all agree are a distraction right now instead of a aide to learning.”
Cassidy explains some ways he has seen students use phones in positive ways
” well i see kids, they will put the contents of a skit on their phone for rehearsal, use the scheduling part of their phone to put down when they have tests. Kahoot is also popular for some teachers for a pop quiz.”
This tech we carry around everyday is so powerful and yet so distracting at the same time, if classrooms can adjust and find ways to use cell phones in positive ways while also keeping students focused on the class work and not social media can make learning so much easier on todays youth.
