Valentines is soon approaching and many Londoners from all ages have already showed their support and gratitude to those that one day fought for our peace today.

“Valentines can be a hard time to be on your own. That’s why we would love if Londoners come in, take a couple of minutes and make up a little valentine card and put a heartfelt message on it,” says Karen Sealy, Librarian at the London Public Library Beacock Branch, “I have made up one and it’s very simple no particularly high-end crafting.”

It is London’s first year to join the ‘Valentines for Vets’ initiative by Veterans Affairs Canada. In the past, the London public library participated on ‘postcards for peace,’ but this time they are hoping to send out hundreds of valentines to all the veterans across the country.

“We would just encourage people to think about those who gave their time and freedom to defend our country and to represent Canada. They sacrificed incredibly on our behalf. Many of them now are quite senior and are in hospitals and homes and they may not be receiving a valentine,” adds Sealy.

She says that they have received a few cards per day so far with messages such as, ‘Happy Valentines Day. We are thinking of you’ and some others with thank you messages. Most of them are broad because adults and children don’t know the veterans they are writing to.

“If I could change something, it would be that those cards stay here in London and physically be handed out by Londoners to local veterans.”

For now, the cards will be sent out to all across Canada. ‘Valentines for Vets’ is happening until January 24th at all 16 branches. Veterans Affairs Canada says it’s hoping to hand them out in time for February 14.
