Fanshawe College hired Hot Zone Training Consultants, a private for-profit health and safety training program. OPSEU Local 110 President, Darryl Bedford, said the union representing Fanshawe College instructors, librarians, and counselors, is concerned about the decision. He said the college should have consulted staff who work in the health and safety department.
“We have industry experts in construction and technology, and any number of other fields, and they do have the contacts in the industry when it comes to health and safety.”
The union addressed the matter to the Ontario Labour Relations Board, to find out more about Hot Zone. “From our view, this isn’t confrontational with the college,” he explained, “We’re asking the OLRB to look at this and be able to figure out who these people are.”
He explained under the Colleges’ Collective Bargaining Agreement, college staff are either listed as faculty, management and support staff. Bedford says the Hot Zone employees are
