It was an emotional day for everyone involved, as 25 year old Jared Dejong was sentenced to 5 years in prison, for impaired driving causing the death of Andrea Christidis.
Back in April, Dejong pleaded guilty to driving with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 milliliters of blood, causing death.
Christidis was just 18 years old when she was struck by his car last fall, on the Western University campus.
Family and loved ones of Christidis described her as “unique” with a “bright future” ahead.
Ontario Court Justice Eleanor Schnall addressed the court today describing Dejong as “remorseful” and showing signs of “guilt and shame.”
She handed him a 10 year driving ban on top of his prison sentence.
Andrea Christidis’ mother and sister were not present at the sentencing, due to the unexpected death of her father Chris on May 31st. Christidis’ aunt Soula Koutlemanis spoke on behalf of the family.
