London’s City Council is providing taxpayers with a web tool that shows them where their municipal tax dollars are going.
City treasurer Martin Hayward says Londoners can calculate their property tax bill based on the latest city budget using the city’s multi-year tax collector.
Depending on the type of property, the website shows how much of the individual tax payments go to education and municipal services.
Hayward says the site breaks down where specific funds are allocated to within municipal services.
“[A big bulk of the budget goes] to protective services and then financial management,” Hayward said. “Financial management is all of our capital costs, contingencies and those types of things”
Hayward says the site also provides predictions on tax increases based on the multi-year budget.
Councillor Harold Usher asked Hayward if Londoners can get access to information on how much taxes outside of property tax impact municipal services.
“[The site focuses] on the individual tax payer and where the property tax goes,” Hayward said.
Councillor Virginia Ridley commended Hayward on the web tool and says that her constituents have been seeking this tool.
A link to the website will be included in the May 2017 tax bill mail out.
