Have you ever wanted to get your hands dirty while connecting yourself to mother earth? Than The Horticulture Technician program may be for you.
Each year Fanshawe students help develop the landscape design that is admired all over the campus.
The students learn how to learn how to build and maintain landscapes, gardens and indoor spaces. They will also learn about arboriculture, landscape design, plant identification, and production and even business management.
Horticulture students can expect about 80 percent of their work to be done outside of the classroom.
Students reek the benefits of the on-campus greenhouse that is exclusively for Horticultural students.
The Horticulture students will also participate in national events such as Skills Canada, Canada Blooms and Landscape Congress.
Cuddy Gardens is owned by Fanshawe College and is managed by the Horticulture Program. The garden features one of the largest collections of plants in Ontario
Horticulture Instructor, Matthew Hart, said their most recent project was a retaining wall project just outside of M building. A retaining wall is a structure designed and constructed to resist the lateral pressure of soil. The students were doing some base preparations that would be the first steps in creating the retaining wall. Some of the other most recent projects that the Horticulture students have done include one of the newly planted garden beds in the Fanshawe Residence. Another project that was recently completed was the planted garden beds that can found outside the Student Wellness Centre. It is currently in full bloom, with daisies and Coreopsis flowers. The idea for this one was to display the Fanshawe Falcon colors proudly, in a fun contrast of red and white. Both of these projects were was completed over the summer.
If you aren’t interested in becoming a student but still want to reek the benefits of the horticulture world than The London Fanshawe Horticulture Society (LFHS) is the club you want to be a part of. The club welcomes all levels of gardeners. So whether you are a new home-owner, novice gardeners, professional horticulturalists, and even master gardeners. Enthusiasts will learn floral design, landscaping principles, arboriculture basics, gardening tips, and plant appreciation. LFHS is always getting involved within the community and work in partnership with local organizations to help improve their gardens and grounds.
The group meets once a month and the next meeting will be happening on Thursday, September the 20th at the Siloam United Church, located at 1240 Fanshawe Park Road East in London, Ontario.
