Doctor Justine Shuey is a certified sexologist and a certified sexual educator and she visited Fanshawe College this past Thursday. As part of sex week at Fanshawe, she spoke to students about subjects revolving around sex talk. She also gave advice to people who are new to their sex life or those who just don’t know much about it yet. Students had an interactive experience today, as they got the opportunity to text in questions that were answered by Dr. Shuey.
Dr. Shuey describes her show as a hilarious, honest, no-holds-barred approach to sexuality education that uses puppets, props, interactive activities and audience participation to address misinformation head-on while enhancing sexual awareness. Dr. Shuey covers a variety of sexual topics including Sex, Love, Healthy Relationships, Communication, and Consent. She says students will leave educated, informed, and empowered to take charge of their sexuality in safe and appropriate ways.
Dr.Shuey said students are not learning about sex. She goes on to say that individuals are sexual beings throughout their entire lifespan and they express themselves sexually in a variety of ways. “It is really important that people know how to make informed and educated decisions about their sex, sexual health, to know about consent and to respect partners.”
People who are new to being sexually active or wanting to be sexually active should not be discouraged. Dr.Shuey tells us it’s not a thing anybody gets at first. It takes some time, practice and exploring of your body and your partner’s body. The communication factor here is key to figure out what works for you and what works for your partner. This is also very important to develop a healthy relationship moving forward.
Students get an interactive experience at her shows, as they get the opportunity to anonymously text in questions that are answered by Dr. Shuey.
