Fire Prevention Week is coming to an end, the last event will be wrapping up Saturday at 4:30pm at 1335 Fanshawe Park Rd W where Lowe’s North will be held.
Fire prevention week is not only filled with fun but also with some education aspects where residents can ask questions and learn how to protect their home. Program coordinator for the fire inspection and fire safety education program at Fanshawe College Frank Donati explained the leading cause of house fires.
“The number one cause of fires in Ontario is kitchen fires, unattended cooking so that is people coming home late hungry and they’re tired. Maybe they are not paying attention.”
The London Fire Department has come up with three simple steps to follow to protect yourself:
1- look
2- Listen
3- Learn
Look within your home to sport the potential fire hazards and make sure to deal with those hazards before anything happens.
Listen to your alarms, every second counts in this very dangerous situation so you need to make sure you know what both a smoke and carbon monoxide alarm sounds like.
Learn two ways out of every room and agree on a safe place to meet outside of the house.
Donati advises that you have a fire plan in place because having the mentality that no such thing will ever happen to you is not enough to protect your family.
Some people want to do more and that may include making a career out of fire safety. Some people may not know but there are more options then becoming a firefighter.
Program coordinator for the fire inspection and fire safety education program at Fanshawe College Frank Donati explains what his course covers.
Some events that have gone on earlier in the week include multiple displays around the community, school fire drills throughout London and even some coffee with local firefighters.
If you have not had a chance to check out a display there is no need to panic you still have time!
Dianne LeBold the Chief Fire Prevention Officer says
“We’ve had a very busy fire prevention week this year. Today we will be at South Costco and tomorrow at McDonalds for coffee with firefighters 11-2, Masonville Place and Oakville mall after that.”
She also wants to remind everyone to take advantage of the look, listen and learn steps.
