The legalization of marijuana is quickly approaching which means that new rules and laws will be put into place. Law enforcement and different areas of the city such as bars, are having complications when deciding rules and regulations. Fanshawe College, for example, isn’t quite sure how the campus is going to handle the new law. Potentially, there are talks about banning the smoking and use of marijuana on campus, even in the smoking zones around the school.
Although, the people that would be mainly affected by this new rule would be the thousands of students that attend the college every single day. And even though there are many students, a handful of them gave their opinions.
“I think it should be treated like tobacco.” Connor, a student, says. “I think if it’s being legalized like alcohol or tobacco itself, you should be able to smoke it if it’s permitted in a smoking area.”
Another student, Sophie, agreed with Connor that if it’s going to be legalized, it should be allowed to be smoked where tobacco is.
“I feel like they’re not really following the legalization then,” she says, “banning smoking all together at the college is probably going to have a big impact on a lot of people whether it’s just smoking marijuana or just regular smoking.”
But then there are those individuals who attend the college that agree with a policy to rid smoking cannabis on campus. Maria, a student, sides with the college.
“I think that one of the regulation for marijuana being legal is students not being allowed to smoke it on school property. Because it will enable them to come to school more often and maybe also on their 10 minute breaks they might decide to go smoke a joint outside, and they will come to class and not be able to focus.”
Samantha, another student, agreed with the college as well.
“I think it’s a good idea because it could distract students and teachers in class, and other students from their learning.”
The legalization of marijuana will be official on October 17th across the country. Stay tuned next week for more information regarding the legalization.
