London District Catholic School Board is promoting active school travel, and plans to implement this over the next two years. The plan is to encourage students and parents to travel to school via walking or biking, rather than getting car rides from parents.
This plan is coming into action because school driveways are getting too congested with parent’s vehicles. The vehicle congestion makes it difficult for buses to maneuver the already tight spaces, and increases the odds of children getting hurt.
Crossing Guards like Debbie Sharpe are excited for this plan. “It is a little bit more of a flow, but it is also very rewarding to see the kids on foot walking to school. It somewhat airs out their brain in the morning and gives a sense of accomplishment by being able to get to school by foot.”
Sharpe loves her job, and hopes that having the chance to see more kids each morning and evening will widen her work family, continuing the sense of accomplishment that her job gives her.
