The best of London went head to head this morning at Oakridge Secondary School for the Boys AAA WOSSAA Volleyball Championship. TVRAA City Champions Oakridge, welcomed runner up Lucas to their gym this morning with the winner heading to OFSAA in Windsor. This was the second time the two have faced off in the past four days. Oakridge defeated Lucas on Friday night in the City Finals at Fanshawe College winning in four sets. Today was a different out come as the Vikes upset Oakridge in five sets winning 15-12 in the fifth.
The Oaks came out hot dominating the first set and winning 25-16. It went back and fourth all morning as the second ended with Lucas on top 25-21. The next two sets were spilt as well as Oakridge won the third 25-22 and then Lucas winning the fourth 25-23. In the fifth set Lucas powerhouse and captain Michael Donovan went to work, as the Oaks defence could not stop him. Donovan had six kills in the fifth set and dominated not only the set but the whole match.
“We have struggled with Oakridge all year, I can’t even put in words how it feels to beat them on their home court,” says and emotional Donovan.
The Oakridge gym was packed with red, blue, and gold and the crowd was chirping Lucas all match, but it didn’t seem to effect the Vikes like the Oaks had wished. “The atmosphere really motivated us and helped us get fired up, we had been waiting for this game all season and the crowd really helped us keep pushing,” adds Donovan.
While the Oaks season has now come to an end, the Vikings are off to Windsor to compete in for an OFSAA Championship and are looking to bring the banner back to London. Donovan adds that this is his first time at an OFSAA championship in his four years in the blue and white and is excited to do it along side the special team they have.
