A $5-million donation has been made for epilepsy research at Western University.
This donation comes in the wake of Jack and Sharon Cowin’s $2.5-million donation, inspired by their granddaughter’s ongoing fight with epilepsy. Western University is matching the donation, making for a grand total of $5-million.
The couple has watched their granddaughter, Sophie, get bounced from specialist to specialist with little to no results. Her long fight was made a little easier after coming to the Western University Hospital. “The treatment and the understanding that she got at Western was superior to any place, and anyone else, that she’d talked to in her vast research,” says Jack.
The money will be put towards strengthening collaboration between research at Western’s Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, and the Robarts Research Institute. This collaboration will benefit hundreds of epilepsy patients a year.
University Professor, Dr. Davy Chen, says “when donors support your research, it enables us to explore new angles, test new therapies and ultimately advance our collective knowledge to new levels.”
