London’s new city council will have to decide where to place the supervised drug use site next month. It will not be an easy discussion but is one that must be dealt with efficiently and carefully. A site proposed for 446 York St. is raising concerns for some who happen to be close to the area. With this kind of service, some businesses and community members are worried the drug site could effect safety and security.
Hannah Durham is in the Fashion Marketing program at Fanshawe College. She regularly visits Sophie’s Gown Shop which is located down the street from the potential drug use site. Durham’s main concern is the security of the shop and whether this new site may bring problems to the business.
“I’m just afraid issues may arise with the drug use site because of how closely knit the area is already. I feel that it isn’t the ideal place for a drug use site to be placed. I do think it is extremely important to have one in London and if this is the only place that the city feels they should put it, then that’s what has to be done.”
Durham believes the surrounding shops should have more of a say in this matter. She feels the city council should really take their time and consider all factors pertaining to up-and-running businesses.
“In the end, it is up to council and I do hope they really think about what’s best for the community. I have seen so many people using drugs and it’s scary to think how dangerous they can be to a human life. Yes, problems may come along with the site but in reality, it is helping those who struggle with drug addictions. It’s great that London is providing this service and I do fully support it. But of course, there’s always concerns.”
Marnie Sanders is hoping to be a potential volunteer at the site. Sanders is excited to see how this will all unfold and how it will help reduce opioid overdoses in the city.
“This is such a huge problem, not just in London, but everywhere. The fact that we can provide a service to those who need help is so amazing. I am beyond thrilled I can apart of this. My friend had a drug addiction and unfortunately passed so I can relate to this on a personal level.”
The government is hoping the site will do a better job connecting people to treatment and other services, and a better job monitoring progress. Managing addiction challenges engaged the attention of many in the recent fall election.
