Lock up your valuables or lose them this Christmas. That’s what Ontario Police are telling people to do in regards of your holiday shopping and other valuables left your vehicles during their annual blitz. The Lock It or Lose It campaign is a year round awareness piece by the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police. The campaign was just launched for the holidays this week and Joe Couto, Director of Government Relations with the OACP says they see a rise in theft during the holidays.
“It’s a prime time when people are shopping and running from store to store and it’s very easy for us to just leave bags in the bag seat or forget to lock away our electronics.”
It’s important to not be targeted just because you’ve left something of value in plain sight, which “Bad Santa’s” will be on the hunt for during the holiday season. Couto says we can’t help but be forgetful since the holidays can get hectic.
“You are in control of your life and that’s sometimes is very hard for us in the busyness. We can feel like we’re out of control. So sometimes it can be the little things, like simply forgetting to lock a door.”
The campaign is a big awareness piece and reminds the public to take extra precautions around the holidays. Couto goes on to add that a lot of theft can be preventable. You can expect to see local police out in public parking lots like at malls and shopping centres, distributing flyers reminding the public to lock it or lose it.
