Being a post-secondary student is expensive. There are countless expenses that students need to constantly keep track of, but one that is often forgotten about is the cost of campus food. Countless students complain about the prices of food that are available on campus. Especially for students living in residence, affordable food costs are an important issue.
Frank Miller, is the director of Hospitality Services at Western University. He insists that Western’s residence food prices are
determined similarly to grocery stores.
“In terms of food pricing in residence, we’ve moved to a menu model so that we’re paying be weight, no different from some of the grocery stores.”
He continues by saying that students themselves are largely responsible for the amount of money that they decide to spend on food.
“Our dining halls, I think we try to reflect reduced pricing and students can also use their meal plan money on campus or off campus. So, it’s really a flexible program that has to managed by the student in terms of teaching the student how to control dollars.”
Many schools have programs for students who can’t afford to purchase food from the school’s on campus or in residence eateries. Although students may have issues with the costs, with proper budgeting, students can be able to live on campus without suffering from hunger.
