Internships are many times the stepping stone for a student to get their foot in the door when it comes to a career. Students who are in the science, technology, engineering and
mathematics field are often the first choice.
The Art of Tech internship caters to students in their upper years of the liberal arts, social science of the faculty of information and media studies programs. Businesses in the tech sector will be paired with students who fit the position that are looking for.
Program coordinator Zach Anderson says that the program provides a bridge between tech sector companies and students.
“The inspiration behind the internship is really addressing a need that we saw in the tech centre where these growing organizations were seeking different types of employers to round out their growing teams.”
Anderson believes that liberal arts students that special skill sets that companies could benefit from.
“The ability of a liberal art student to think critically, adapt to change, and see things from various perspectives and respond to consumer needs in really important. It’s also really important to be able to integrate different types of knowledge and skill sets.”
Many times, internships for arts students are unpaid, however, the Art of Tech internship is an full time paid opportunity. Anderson hopes that the program will allow more companies to consider arts students.
“I think there’s a little bit of demonstrating that hopefully this program can do this year where we can start to change the mindsets around what liberal arts students can bring.”
