In today’s current political landscape- the voices of young people have been louder than ever before.
Its not uncommon to scroll through social medias like Twitter or Facebook and see posts related to Canadian, or American politics from people who are in high school and college.
As well as a presence on social media- its more common now to see student run political rallying- one example is the recent OSAP rally at Western University.
Students organized a last minute rally and march at Western’s Concrete Beach, and according to co-president of Western’s New Democrats Lena Gahwi, its amazing they had as many people out as they did,
“Just because it was so last minute and so short notice, I didn’t think a lot of people would come- but they did come and it was so heartwarming and inspiring.”
After a short gathering with speeches, the students led a march around the campus and onto Western Road, chanting thing like “Doug Ford has got to go.” The rally also featured appearances from local MPPs Terence Kernaghan and Peggy Satler.
Kernaghan says its important for students to get together and have their voices heard,
“Its really important that people organize and let the government know how deeply this is going to effect them.”
According to Gahwi, students are planning on continuing to let their voices be heard at Western’s upcoming USC election, and Kernaghan says the fight at Queen’s Park is far from over in regards to this issue.
