Canada is considered a prime example of cultural pluralism. We see peoples from all walks of life and all corners of the world celebrate their culture. Fanshawe is definitely a place where we see that as fact.
Fanshawe held a Cultural awareness fair featuring foods and performances from many student’s cultures. May Azorez, a member of the Filipino Club, was one of the performers at the fair. Along with the other performers, Azorez wore a traditional Filipino dress and used traditional fans as part of her performance
One of the more eye-catching accessories on her was a golden chicken on top of her head.
“In the Philippians, we have a lot of chickens, that’s why it’s on my head. Some of our clothing comes from Islam as well” she added.
Many other cultures were featured including Indian and Brazilian. Azorez thinks that it is great that the campus allows students to have their cultures on display.
“It’s great to raise awareness of the culture so that people around the world can see what is the difference or what the significance of the culture,” said Azorez.
Amanda Nowak, a general arts student, was one of the many students in attendance. She thinks having event’s like the fair is beneficial to educate all students about other’s ways of thinking.
“I think it’s important for us to learn about cultures so we can be aware of others perspectives. We all come from different walks of life and, I think, knowing a little about other cultures can help us be more understanding” said Nowak.
Fanshawe has many clubs for those of different cultural backgrounds to meet others as well. The campus has many events for different cultural backgrounds including Bollywood night.
