There are many different ways that people spend there evenings, for some it is taking part in the nightlife or going out for a drink with friends. What many people do not understand are the rules servers must follow.
All servers that sell alcohol must be Smart Serve certified. This is an online test teaching servers how to safely sell alcohol.
Even though all servers are certified, some rules seem to be forgotten. Julie Roney works at a local golf course, she admits that remembering all the restrictions is tough.
“I am aware of the rules but forget sometimes because I took the test three years ago. I definitely remember the basics like I.D.ing someone and cutting someone off that is clearly intoxicated. When I am busy it is hard to keep track of who has had what.”
Although there are many rules that must be followed when selling alcohol, some believe that when the rules are bent they have more ‘fun’.
‘We we’re at a wedding in the summer. At the wedding we knew the bartenders which allowed our group to have free range of alcohol. Many of us were quite intoxicated”
Amanda Bolster noticed this at the wedding as she is Smart Serve certified. Large penalties are given out to events not following the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario. The event can be immediately shut down, or fines can be given out by an AGCO inspector or the police.
All events and servers are reminded that each customer that is sold alcohol becomes a responsibility until he/she is sober again. All guests that are drinking should call;
- Taxi
- Uber
- Friend/Family
- Public Transit
Do not drink and drive.
