Brie Larson stars as Carol Danvers also known as the Marvel Cinematic Universes new lead hero Captain Marvel. This new movie brings with it a degree of excitement being the first Marvel film to not only star a female lead but also to have a female director.
It hasn’t been completely smooth sailing though for the Captain, reviews have been mixed with the film only sitting at a 65% on Metacritic at the time of writing.
Critics have said the film lacks a compelling lead and has a some what messy story with no big take away moments. Others say that the film is just as enjoyable as any other Marvel film.
The movie has had some backlash around the message within it as well. The movie bluntly tackles gender stereotypes and has also been open about this stance during the press tours. This strategy is seen by some fans as being “too political” and “forcing an agenda”. These individuals point at films like Wonder Women as a film that provided a fresh positive breath of female empowerment without feeling like it was forced upon them.
On the flip side of that, others feel like this more assertive approach is perfect to get the message across and inspire young people to not be held back by the roles assigned to their genders.
Ether way movie goers will decide this weekend if the film is worth the hype surrounding it.
