The end of 2019 as well as the end of the decade ended in winning fashion for the London Knights. In the second half of their annual back to back with the Sarnia Sting, London prevailed with a 4-2 win over their long-time bitter rival.
The first period was a very quick one with over thirty shots between the two teams combined with both teams seeing multiple chances in the period. Brett Brochu kept the game scoreless through the first period when he made some brilliant saves including one when he was on his stomach down and out with some help from Knights captain Alec Regula.
The Knights would open the scoring early in the second period when rookie Sean McGurn scored his first career goal in the Ontario Hockey League. “I was just really excited to get the boys on the board first so I was happy.” Said McGurn of his reaction to the goal postgame.
With Connor McMichael and Liam Foudy away from the team for the world junior hockey championships, it has allowed the younger players including McGurn to get into the lineup more often and McGurn believes that it has helped his game a ton. “It feels great to be able to get more games I’m just happy I get to contribute for these guys on a nightly basis.”
Billy Moskal would add another goal late in the second period and the Knights went into the locker room up 2 nothing. The third period would see four goals between as the teams would trade goals in the period. Sean Josling got the Sting on the board in the period. Luke Evangelista would then restore the two-goal lead for London with five minutes to go in the game. Justin Nolet scored not long afterward to ensure Sarnia was not going away without a fight. Luke Evangelista would end the comeback hopes with a long-range empty-net goal from his own end with less than one minute left in the game to make it 4-2 London which would end up being the final.
The Knights are currently fourth in the western conference with 44 points and a record of 21-12-1-1. The Knight’s next game comes Friday night at home at Budweiser Gardens against the Mississauga Steelheads. The Steelheads have a record of 14-20-2-1 and they sit-in seventh place in the OHL’s eastern conference. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 PM
