American Football
The 54th Super Bowl is this Sunday night on February 2nd. The Super Bowl is one of the biggest sporting events in the history of sports. The NFL has become one of the biggest professional sports leagues in the world for quite some time now. They have diehard fans all over the world. From my findings the NFL is more liked in Canada by many Canadians even though we have our own football league the Canadian Football League. Many people will say the competition level is the NFL is a lot better than the CFL which is arguably correct.
The 54th Super Bowl this weekend is in Miami Florida. The match up will be the Kansas City Chiefs vs the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers haven’t been in the big game since 2013 when they played the Baltimore Ravens and unfortunately lost that match up by a score of 34-31 in one of the craziest Super Bowls to date. The Kansas City Chiefs haven’t been in the biggest game of the year since 1970 so Chief’s fans have been waiting a little longer to return to the Super Bowl then 49ers fans.
The NFL has grown into one of, if not the biggest sports leagues in the entire world. The NFL is becoming more and more popular compared to before, by now playing games in the UK each season, also playing games in Mexico City each season. They are extending their demographic of playing live games for more than just there American fans.
The sports culture for instance in the UK is very different from what it is in Canada and the United States. There main sport is what we would call soccer but they call ‘football’ and that tells us the difference right away as Canada’s main sport is Hockey and the States would be American football and basketball.
Kelsey Butler a student from Manchester Metropolitan University said, “Although it’s not the biggest sport yet in Manchester I’d say it’s growing in popularity because of the NFL choosing to play games in London.”
Despite the NFL being an American Football league with only american teams, they have diehard fans all over the world. From my own experience I’ve realized a lot of Canadians will have a favorite NFL team but might not even know all of the CFL teams in Canada. Even with Canada having their own football league The NFL is way more dominant. The level of competition is a lot better as when some players aren’t good enough for the NFL anymore they will try the CFL, Johnny Manziel is the most recent of quite a few players to try and do so to save their career and possibly get back to the NFL, Many times it doesn’t turn in the players favor and one of the main reasons is because the players in the NFL are too good.
The Super Bowl is the biggest sporting event that happens yearly. Many people who aren’t even sports fans let alone football fans will sit down and watch the big game and try and understand what’s going on. It’s one night of the year where majority of people are focused on one sports game. I will always remember growing up and watching the big game at least once a year with many friends and family before I became an NFL fan and enjoy watching it every other week anyway. The NFL gains more fans every year and a lot of it’s probably from new football fans watching the Super Bowl. This is a big event all over the world as the Super Bowl will always be a super event.
