Today is Canadian beer day. A day in which Canadian brewers and beer fans around the country will be raising a glass in recognition of the impact beer and connected industries have on our communities, culture, and the economy.
This celebration, that started last year is dedicated to commemorating not just the beer itself, but also the many Canadians involved in this industry. Whether its brewing, selling, delivering, serving, and or enjoying this popular beverage all parts are to be celebrated.
The city of London has a rich history with the brewing industry, that dates back to the 1820’s. Some names such as Samuel Eccles, Thomas Carling, and John Labatt were very popular in London’s 19th-century brewing community. Most of these names left an ever lasting impact, on the country’s national brewing heritage.
In the same note, the Labatt brewery was very popular back in the day, and was founded by John
Balkwill. The brewery was located on Simcoe Street, and is still located there to this day. Balkwill would later sell the business to John Kinder Labatt, to become the Labatt brewery we know today. The brewery that would conquer not just the country but the world, becoming the number 1 selling Canadian beer nationally and internationally as well.
One of the biggest breweries in Canadian history had our city of London as origin, and that is something Londoners should be proud of, and specially today on Canadian beer day, it is a story worth telling and remembering.
