With all the rules and regulations put in place for gatherings due to COVID-19, socializing has been pushed to the back seat for many students. Fanshawe Student Union has made it their duty to continue to offer events held at the Outback Shack. Kevin Masterson, FSU’s events and activities manager felt like they owed it to the students.
“We felt like we really needed to do something for our residence students living on campus. You don’t want a res room to feel like a prison cell. It’s just a little bit of something, a little mental health break, because everyone is feeling this pandemic obviously.”
With events like, Karaoke night, Deal or No Deal, and psychic readings, there seems to be no shortage of entertainment for on campus students. The student union wanted to offer these things to students living on campus, because of all the restrictions due to COVID.
The Outback Shack is allowed 50 people inside, including staff. The student union has made in person tickets available solely to those living in residence. However, you can also attend and interact with the events virtually. Kevin was happy to mention all the hard work their support team has put in to make this possible.
“We have a great support team here at Fanshawe student union. Our videographer and in house tech are really working together with our web person as well. Just to make it run smoothly as far as broadcasting and online. The key for us was to make it online and interactive. So, if we have 20 students in the bar… we can still have 2000 students watching online, participating as well!”
The uncertainty of this pandemic leaves a lot of questions looming over people’s head. FSU have events planned, however, as Masterson mentioned, things change day to day in the COVID world.
