Recently, Goderich has acquired their first ever zero waste, package free, refillery, plant-based shop.
It has been estimated that when we place items in our blue bins that only around 10 percent of the plastics get recycled. It is better to choose things like paper and glass products to try to better our environment since they can be broken down more easily to be repurposed.
Sandra Ambing is the owner of BYOB Zero Waste Depot and she is the first to bring zero waste to the small community of Goderich.
She first got into the idea of bringing a package free store to the town as she felt like people in the community could benefit from the shop and that the shop provides options for the residents.
“Going into this business its more based on passion. For me, I’m passionate about being a minimalist and living a zero waste lifestyle. I really love the concept of reducing your carbon footprint because we have control over this scenario,” she said.
Ambing believes in putting her community before how much money she makes, and that zero waste should be accessible to all, and that it” should be a regular way of life instead of a niche way of life… it should be normality.”
She believes that all walks of life should be able to obtain and participate in a more environmentally friendly lifestyle regardless of income and education. As she noted “anybody that walks in could be on pension and buy organic spices from me and be able to afford it because they would like to be able to afford it.”
Her mentality regarding her shop is that the small town of Goderich should be able to have the same experiences with package free, bulk buying, zero waste, and organic alternatives just like some of the bigger cities do. She wants to ensure the option is there for people and that they do not have to travel too far to get the same quality and price.
