On average students in Canada pay over $6000 a year for tuition costs in universities and colleges. With that being said the return on investment isn’t always guaranteed. The true value of a diploma or degree can vary from absolutely nothing, to the career you’ve always dreamed of. It is also important to note that graduates see 57 percent more job opportunities than non- graduates, as found in a study conducted by Northeastern University. However, finding a job after graduating is still more difficult in some fields than others.
Ben Vyfschaft is a Fanshawe Graduate who was able to pursue what he wanted after finishing his time in college.
“For me it was really easy to find a job in the field related to my program. The job I work at now is actually the co-op placement I did for school, they offered me a job as soon as I graduated from the program.”
For most, they don’t find success as fast as Ben. Luckily Fanshawe boasts a great graduate employment rate. In 2017 alone, Fanshawes graduate employment rate was over 5 percent higher than the provincial college average, sitting at 90.3 percent.
For other, finding a job after school did not quite go as planned. AJ Currie Bartlett went to Fanshawe Lawrence Kinlin School of Business and graduted in 2019. For him he was able to find work after school, as he took on a completely different field of work. AJ now works in trades, but thinks maybe somewhere down the line his diploma might be of use.
“I don’t think my diploma had helped me get the job, but I do think that it does hold value for the future. Just in case I want to change my career path, I guess we’ll see how it goes.”
For students trying to navigate towards a career path is difficult. It is important to try and go to school to study something you are passionate about. Use the help of guidance counsellors and the people around you to find a program that will help you find what you truly want to do. Otherwise, you may end up going through school, struggling to find a job in that field. If you love your job, you’ll never work a day in your life.
