The Canadian Automobile Association’s annual ‘Worst Roads’ advocacy campaign has influenced change for the past 17 years. After taking a one-year break due to the pandemic, the campaign has returned to fix more of Ontario’s worst roads.
Tina Wong, a government relations specialist for CAA South Central Ontario says the provincial top 10 list is the list that most people wait for in late spring, early summer. The campaign also creates a series of regional lists with a focus on different Ontario cities.
“The point of all of this is to highlight to decision makers in municipalities, a snapshot of the public perception of where roads are perceived to need the most improvement or work,” Wong says.
Wong says they are expecting somewhat different results to come from the voting this year due to the pandemic.
“People have been moving away from public transit and carpooling. To perhaps riding their bikes more or using their personal vehicles” says Wong.
She says no London roads made the list for Top 10 roads of 2019 provincially. Wharncliffe Road South and Wonderland Road South did take two out of the five spots in the Western Regional List. Wharncliffe ranking 1st, and Wonderland 5th.
“We know that Wharncliffe was made a priority in the 2030 Transit Master Plan by the City of London, just due to growth management and implementation strategies for new transportation projects” Wong says.
Ontarians can vote through the online portal until April 18th.
“For every vote cast, you have a chance to win free gas for a year,” Wong adds. “People can send their nominations more than once, you can vote every day if you want.”
