The fashion world is a fast-paced industry. With the use of social media sites like TikTok and Instagram, we are all able to stay updated with the latest fashion trends.
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major influence on the fashion world. Many fashion students have noticed that monochromatic sweat sets and black face masks have become popular during these unprecedented times.
Emma Haid is one of the Fashion Marketing and Management students at Fanshawe College. “I think people are dressing for comfort. Sweat suits are really in, but transitioning over into a summer matching set, so summer sweatshirts and a matching hoodie or in a tank underneath.” She says. “I think sets are forever, really popular and trendy.”
With the upcoming summer season, people are using social media sites for inspiration. Lauren Vahrmeyer, a Fashion Market student at Fanshawe, says she’s noticed that fashion models are wearing shorts that are a lot longer and high-waisted.
“I think that a past trend was you’d see as short as you could possibly get with shorts. Now what’s really popular is longer shorts and even dress pants.” Vahrmeyer says. “They’re now turning those into shorts, with more of like a dad kind of vibe, which I think is cute.”
Durrel Brown says with the ongoing pandemic, it has inspired a new wave of fashion and people are trying different things. “I work with shoes and wedges are making the biggest comeback right now, which I’m so thankful for because they’re the most comfortable shoe you could every wear.” He also says that the “60’s” era is making a big comeback with longer shorts and skirts.
“It’s so much more about the style and less about showing skin, which is something that’s new for me as well.” Brown says. “I think that that’s kind of a transition that some of us are making great.”
Vahrmeyer adds that they focus a lot on sustainability in their “Dynamics of Fashion” class. Switching to more sustainable fashion is a great choice to help the environment and your bank account as well. With everyone staying at home and not being able to shop in-person, people have been selling their clothes online.
“I think a lot of us have ventured over into thrifting, which is a great thing. You’re giving something else another chance a new life.” Vahrmeyer stated. “If you have an old sweater or just clothes that you find you don’t wear anymore, but you don’t want to give it to a thrift store, you can upcycle it. We’ve done a lot of that in class and it’s a good way to practice sustainability.”
The Fashion Marketing students also share that being comfortable is key, but also being yourself and feeling confident is what will make you stand out. Tala Elkhayri adds that the latest styles are very universal with this generation.
“I feel like with this day and age, we’re all trying to be different and try to stand out.” Elkhayri stated. “The trends right now is to wear whatever you want. Just go in your closet and say, I’m gonna wear this top today with these pair of pants. There’s no thinking to it anymore.”
As stated from local fashion students, social media has had a major impact on the fashion industry. We can all have some fun with updating our wardrobes, but also being ourselves and feeling comfortable in our own skin.
