Jesse’s Journey has been no stranger to doing the unthinkable, and on Sunday they did just that.
With more participants this year than ever before, the organization raised over $200,000 during their nationwide Virtual Walk for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD).
The event had support from nine provinces across Canada, and even reached as far as New Zealand.
“This success just shows that more and more folks are connected to the organization because they believe in the mission,” says Perry Esler, the Executive Director of Jesse’s Journey.
The organization’s founder John Davidson started this journey with his son Jesse in 1994, who had been diagnosed with DMD when he was just six years old.
“In the beginning it was Jesse’s story. Today, it’s Jesse’s story and all the young boys and men who have DMD across the country,” says Esler.
“Duchenne can be a bit of an isolating disease, and so we look at our responsibility as to be able to unite, educate and provide support for these families through information. While also doing events so that we can raise enough to continue the research funding that John started.”
Esler and his wife participated in Sunday’s event and walked 33 km in honour of those affected by DMD.
From the beginning of this journey, John Davidson’s mission was to fund research with the ultimate goal of one day finding a cure. Today, this legacy lives on through loyal friends, family, and supporters in the Duchenne community.
