This morning at the Tokyo Olympics, history was made.
London, Ontario native Damian Warner won an Olympic gold medal for Canada in the decathlon.
Warner set multiple records in different events over the last two days and earned an Olympic record of 9,018 points.
On top of the records broken, this makes Warner the first Canadian in history to get a gold medal in the event.
“It’s been a long two days. When you go through the whole battle of the decathlon and finally finish and you get the result you were looking for, there is no greater feeling. This is a dream come true,” says Warner.
This gold is Warner’s second Olympic medal. He scored a bronze in the 2016 Rio games.
The updated medal count for Canada is now 5 gold, 5 silver, and 8 bronze.
