Today was the day that millions of Canadians across the nation put their votes down onto an official ballot for polling. Tonight, (and by extension the next few days) expect many to be eagerly awaiting results, checking poll trackers for the latest statistical update. But if you feel lost, know you’re not alone. We spoke to Kal Brown, a voter and student about this rather confusing time.
“The time between the polls closing and results coming in can be a very confusing time, a time of high political tension for some Canadians and most definitely the candidates involved. All we can really do is wait it out and see what the future of our country may look like, wither that be Liberal, Conservative, NDP, or PPC. Who Knows? ”
Here are some important facts to know going forward.
First thing’s first expect a delay in comparison to other years. We are, after all in a global pandemic (even if it can be easy to forget so sometimes). This is the first time many Canadians are mailing in their ballots, with this comes an additional verification process and time. Elections Canada could possibly not have definite results until at least tomorrow afternoon. COVID has really changed this election around, so have patience and stay diligent.
Also be on the lookout for resignations from major and minor political leaders, Election night resignations are a common occurrence in Canadian politics all levels of government.
In conclusion, if this election seems a little weird. You’re right! It is, but with the systems we currently have in place we still have a functioning democracy, just be patient with results and the ever lasting effects of a new political power taking new seats in the Canadian government.
