Although social media might seem like an easy way to communicate with people and to express our feelings and thoughts through tweets and posts, it could be very harmful when misused.
Social media Takes up a big part in our everyday life, especially among teens who tend to rely on a virtual social life. Most teenagers and young adults use social media platforms to build friendships and communicate with people, without realizing that technology could have a huge negative impact on their social life.
Rajat Verma is a father of a 14-year-old teenager, and he speaks from his point of view about how technology and the misuse of social media has affected his son. Through an interview with Rajat, he explained from a parent’s point of view that social media platforms have changed the way his son views himself whether physically or lifestyle wise.

“Technology has turned him into an anti-social person, and has definitely affected the way he views himself. I feel this generation has been brainwashed by the stereotypes that live in the society .” Rajat Verma
Through the interview, Rajat made sure to mention that his son, David, has not been spending time with the family or going outside to see his friends. He also described this generation with ” technology bubble prisoners” ,and he said that he has always wanted his son to live a social life filled with memories and not waste his life on the phone.
On the other hand, social media can be misused in different other ways such as only bullying, negative comments, harassment, etc. …
Rasha is a registered nurse at Trillium health partners mental health hospital. She explains from past experience with patience how social media could affect a person’s mental health and self-esteem and how in some cases it has led to self-harm or low self-confidence. She also speaks from past experiences with patients at the mental hospital where they would be suicidal or they would harm themselves due to only bullying and negative comments from social media users.

At the end of the day, social media is an easy way for people to communicate with each other virtually as well as supporting each other on social media platforms, however, when social media is misused in a harmful way it could have negative long term impact on users.
