Friendsgiving is a term that has recently emerged to celebrate thanks for friendships. Some hold a Friendsgiving in addition to their family’s Thanksgiving. Others have one in lieu of a family celebration because they are away from home. Here are 5 tips to have a successful friendsgiving this year.
Make a groupchat
Whether it’s on iMessages, snapchat, or facebook messenger, find a social media platform that your whole guest list has in common. That way you can all coordinate on what each person is bringing to the celebration. Split up some responsibilities to make it easier for the host.
Decorate
The meal may be the main ingredient to the celebration, but decorations will add a perfectly cozy touch. Your friends are your home away from home, so make the atmosphere feel that way. You could even add a personal touch with some home made decorations.
Share what you are thankful for
Before dinner, go around the table and share whatever you are thankful for. This will bring the warm feeling into the room for the maximal friendsgiving experience. Reminding yourself what you’re thankful for will not only keep you happy but your friends will be happy knowing what is uplifting your spirits.
Games
Maybe some of the people who are coming don’t know each other. Get an ice breaker game going at the table when everyone arrives. After dinner, get a good board game, card game, or charades going to liven things up after stuffing yourselves with the delicious dinner. Or have a quick #foodcoma moment to prepare yourselves before the events begin.
Everyone cleans up
As much as the host may love having people over, the worst part of it is always the clean up afterwards. Have each person responsible for an area to clean. This will let the host know you’re thankful for having everyone over. And if youre the host, you’ll be thankful that your friends stuck around to give a hand.
Some say that the TV show “friends” inspired the word, though there is no record of it being brought up during the series. There isn’t a definite origin but the word’s earliest recorded appearance started in 2008 on twitter. Since then, #friendsgiving has been trickling into social media to become a mainstream term for the pop culture that exists today. It was officially added to the Merriam-Webster’s dictionary in January of 2020.
