Halloween is a significant event for most Canadians where they like to decorate and dress up. It is important when dressing up to make sure that the costumes are respectful and not offending to some groups of people, such as cultural based costumes.
People must acknowledge before dressing up that Halloween is a fun event where people practice fun activities with their kids, therefor, they should be aware of there people’s feelings and respect their cultures. Al Day is the executive director of The London Friendship Centre, he thinks that people must show respect and love to others, he also thinks that cultural based costumes that may be offensive to some people should to be worn under any circumstances. “If you are wearing something that could be offensive… probably shouldn’t wear it.” Al Day said.

Halloween Costume Stores tend to avoid cultural based costumes such as Native costumes in order to show respect to these groups of people and not offend them. Some people wear cultural costumes as a fun way to celebrate while it could be seriously damaging and offensive to some people. Kim is a supervisor at Halloween Alley, she said that one day a costumer walked in and said to her “Thank you for not selling any Native costume.”
Kim explained that the store avoids selling any cultural costumes in order to show respect to all people. ” As for cultural based costumes we only have a few eras, but we do not have any native or specific cultural costumes.” Kim said.
