Usually during the Christmas holidays, students go home. They go home to celebrate with friends and families. But what if you can’t go home? What if the global pandemic has got in the way or you simply do not have the funds to get home? What if you are a international student and can’t go home, what do you do then?
You can either sit around and do nothing or, celebrate Christmas with friends! Throw a friends Christmas. Make a Christmas dinner, play Christmas songs, make a gingerbread house.
Haley and Emma are two roommates that live across from the

season 2, episode 9, ‘The One with Phoebe’s Dad’
school. The two had stayed home for Christmas and will be doing the same this year. Haley explains to me about what the two did last year for Christmas.
“Last year we bought a rotisserie chicken at Food Basics. We kind of just dressed it up. We made some mashed potatoes and brussels sprouts and squash and we just had like a cute little roommate dinner. And obviously because nothing’s really open and like because of the restrictions we couldn’t really get out and do much so we kind of just had a night in watch movies.”
Since we are seeing less and less COVID-19 cases, more places are opening up. Fewer restrictions and bigger capacity meaning people can go actually go out this year. That’s exactly what Haley and Emma are planning on doing for this years Christmas.
“So, this year we’re planning on going out since restrictions have loosened so we can go out. We’re probably going to the bar and maybe we’ll go out to dinner somewhere. We might even make like a Christmas dinner at our house. We’re thinking of doing like a full Christmas dinner. We were thinking of buying an actual Turkey and obviously make all the other stuff as well. Thinking of making a pumpkin pie.”
Haley says. Emma then goes on to say how she’s excited because now she’s of age.
“We’re definitely gonna take advantage of not having as much restrictions and also taking advantage of the fact that we’re both 19 now and we can go out.”
It’s a tough pill to swallow, not being about to go home for the Holidays. Make the most out of a bad situation. Reach out to those that are in the same boat as you. Go out, do festive things! Don’t let not going home ruin the Christmas Sprit.
“I would say since now that COVID restrictions have loosened up a bit, try to go out to the city to see if there’s any events happening or possibly in your residence building that you’re living in, because I’m sure that there’s a lot of people in the same boat as you who are also staying home. I’m sure you can go out find friends and different events. And I would also say just keep in contact with your family do a lot of FaceTime calls and phone calls just so even if you’re not home, you’re still in contact with them and catching up and seeing how they’re doing.”
