Back in August 2021, Ontario legislation surrounding single game sports betting was changed to allow those types of bets to be placed by Ontarians. Now in February 2022, Proline, the one of the biggest sports betting app in Canada has changed its system to allow more of those bets almost half a year later. This system change brings in more revenue to the province as every bet that is placed, but does not win, gets reinvested back into the province.
With many different betting opportunities now, many bettors found this news as great. It gave Canadians a way to bet the way they want to, without having to go to an online sportsbook. Collin Haas is an avid sports bettor and he said that he’s excited for things to come. “Yeah, I’ve been betting on sports using pro-line for years now. The older app and rules of betting in Canada was sort of tough because there weren’t many options to take, but with new rules and ways of betting there’s a lot more opportunity.” The new change gives Canadians many different avenues to go through to get their preferred ticket.
Before the change, the only betting style that Canadians had was parlays across a single sport or on a single style of bet. Now, Canadians have the option of going for the MoneyLine. Which is a bet style of picking the outright winner of the selected game, instead of having to pick between how many points one team would win by, what the spread would be, or pools. This gives Canadians a better option for their bets, knowing that their knowledge could be enough to have that winning ticket, instead of having to rely on a certain situation to happen.
Although with better odds, and better options, comes risk and unsafe gambling. An experienced bettor like Collin knows that he can’t let it get out of control, knowing that, Collin has some restrictions that he puts on himself. “When it comes to safety and knowing my limits, I tell myself I’m not allowed to spend over $50 per paycheck so that I can keep my betting controllable and not get out of hand. along with that, Proline has bet limitations on each bet only allowing you to put $100 on each bet, but I never even go close to that.” Having a restriction on bets is a good way to keep the betting under control, along with letting some close friends or family about what you’re betting on and how much.
Along with the legislation change in August, comes a estimated legislation change set for early April 2022. Ontario looks to become the first province that would legalize online sports betting. Which in turn, would allow sportsbooks such as Bet365, Bodog, and Betway to come to full fruition. But that also means that sportsbooks from the American industry would be given a foot in the door, which not everyone is against. “One way the rule change for sports betting in Canada can be seen is that, they’re Americanizing the sports betting industry. In the states, the single game betting has been around for so long, along with many different ways of betting, different sports books, different styles of bets, and so many other options. So I hope Canada follows follows the US and makes sports betting more like that.” When the state of New York legalized online sports betting, New Yorkers put a whopping $1.6 billion in bets across the first month. If that arrives in Ontario, people can only imagine what the revenue the province would bring in.
