In the past 15 years, technology in the education industry has grown and adapted with the technological advancements. For the majority, gone are the days of overhead projectors, the old T.V’s on wheels, and schools only having one computer lab. Nowadays, you have Smartboards, Chromebooks and classes that wouldn’t be able to be taught if they didn’t have the technology needed. With advancements coming almost every day, can schools do more with technology?
Richard Barnard is a high schooler in his final year, and he spent the last year doing school online due to Covid-19. He believes that school wouldn’t have been able to continue, but there was still more that could have been done. “Based on how my schools used it, I think a lot more could be done. Just because they kind of went for the like, kind of a lowball approach to it. They basically just kind of turned everything that we had online, and just kind of put more into it. So like, just kind of took all of our like written classwork. Just put it online. And that’s about it.” he believes that schools could have created a better online curriculum.
With Covid-19 having forced everyone home and everything online, could school have continued without technology? “If we didn’t have the technology that we have right now, there probably would have of been no school for who knows how long. The only reason school really continued those just because we had the technology for it.” With majority of students having access to the internet at home and technology that allows them to do the work, students were able to continue their education.
With online schooling comes systems in order for students to do online work, they were given online educational systems for the work, such as Brightspace, and D2L Learning. “I definitely think a lot more can be done. Maybe they’ll make some sort of like service or something that’s a lot better than what we have right now. Or find ways to actually make it like what is easier for students to use because I know some online school, stuff like that are way harder to use and others even just in the few that I’ve used.” Richard hopes that educators will be able to find a way to make online school as easy as in person schooling without any difficulties.
