In Sony’s most recent State of Play, a deep dive into the upcoming game Hogwarts Legacy was the only item presented. Hogwarts Legacy is an upcoming open-world RPG game based in the wizarding world of Harry Potter. You will have the freedom to build and create your wizard, the newest student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. During your stay at school, the synopsis promises you will head into battle against a deadly threat seeking to harness some form of ancient magic that could wipe out all creatures in the wizarding world. It is being teased that you are, for some reason, the only one capable of saving the world.
It was revealed that your character would have free reign to experience Hogwarts. Your character will be sorted into a house (Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Slytherin, or Ravenclaw.) You will also be expected to attend some classes that will reportedly increase your skills, abilities, and level in the game. You can spend time in your house dorms, meet others, and build relationships. It is also revealed that you are starting Hogwarts late as you are a fifth year at the start of the game. The available classes will be charms, defense against the dark arts, herbology, and potions classes. Each class will teach some valuable skills for your journey. One of the most exciting parts of the classes you attend looks to be the dueling opportunities you will have to test your combat skills against your peers. You will be free at certain times to explore the castle of Hogwarts as well, as there are many quests, secrets, and challenges to complete. The timeline has been revealed as the 1800s, which means characters from the movie franchise are unlikely to appear in the game.
But, Hogwarts has been revealed as just one portion of the game. There are tons of areas surrounding the castle with secrets to uncover. Some of these areas look like potential dungeons filled with loot and enemies to defeat. You will also discover the mystery of the game’s main villain alongside Professor Figg, who will assist you. All your classes and training come into play when you leave the castle and continue your adventures. Part of the story revolves around the potential of a Goblin rebellion. This reportedly ties into the game’s main villain and central mystery you must uncover.
The combat portion of the game teases many different enemies to fight. Some of the revealed foes for your character are:
- Dark Wizards
- Orcs
- Trolls
- Goblins
- Minotaurs
Spells will be your primary source of power in combat, and it is teased that there will be many options for you to choose from. Spells will either be passive, defensive, or offensive and can help you in more ways than you can imagine. You will have to freedom to choose which you use. Some options shown were spells that Freeze your enemies, launch your enemies, daze your enemies, or instantly kill your enemies. Classic spells that can lift items will also be quite helpful as it seems most of your surroundings will be available for use in combat. Combining certain spells can also be a key focus in battle as it will increase your overall damage output.
Like the movie franchise, you will learn and gain the ability to fly on a broomstick. Optional classes can help you improve your flight skills so that you can always get around the wizarding world. The gameplay shown of the flight system looks incredibly fun and smooth.
Companions will also be a big part of this game as your peers can become your close allies. They can assist you in different ways during your journey. They even, in some cases, have their own stories and questlines for you to experience.
The Room of Requirement was revealed to be in the game. This room was made famous in the Harry Potter movie franchise as the training room for ‘Dumbledore’s Army’ in movies 5-8. This room will be fully customizable and can be used as your base of operations for your journey during the game.
That concluded the big reveal for Hogwarts Legacy. Judging by the gameplay and reveals, this should be a massive game release. The final reveal was the release date, and Hogwarts Legacy will release in Holiday 2022.
