It is officially the midpoint of the school year 2022/2023. Fanshawe midterm grades will be released next week, on Friday, October 21st.
Midterms are different for every field of study, but overall they are tests or practical works. They should show the progress that was made during the first half of the semester. Exams help students realize that this program is not their vocation, or to get even more reassured in their choice.
Some programs have more practical rather than theoretical focus, and they require students to submit one or two projects for assessment. One of those is the Fashion and Design program.
“I don’t have any midterms this semester. A lot of it is more sample based. In classroom I’m using sewing machines and I’m creating small samples for the teacher to look at”
Annabel Nailo, second year Fashion and Design student
For students like Annabel, who are in their second year, exams in person can be a challenge. It is difficult to get used to paper work again, when last year everything was online.
“I’m a little bit stressed because it’s my first time taking an exam in person. Last year everything was online so I’m not sure if I will do well. I really don’t know how to take exams anymore,” explains Sharmi Innaco, a therapy student at Fanshawe.
Although going back to school in person is a big challenge for everyone, some people enjoy being able to be tested in person.
“I feel better about it being in person, because I am able to write on paper, erase or draw things out. Online you’re unable to go back to some questions. For me it works better if I’m able to skip a question and go back in the end,” says Jennifer from the pre-health program.
However, even if there are no midterms, there are always some tests that help teachers decide on the final grades
“We do have a few big tests where we review everything we’ve learned from chapter one to four”, adds Annabel.
