It’s nearly been 40 years since the launch of Apple’s first generation of the Mac computer in 1984. In commemoration of this event, one student at Fanshawe has taken it upon himself to restore one of these machines to its former glory.
Dusan Karich, a second year in Fanshawe’s computer programming program, has spent the last few months fixing and restoring original components of the Apple relic after finding it on Facebook marketplace
Karich expressed that the motivation behind the project stems from his personal love for nostalgia and pop culture, especially from the time of the 80s
“it has been a really nice thing to Value the old things that brought us here and what we have today and this would be a pretty cool piece because like it has been in a lot of movies like Back to the Future, It has been the computer in the Seinfeld sitcom and just like it’s a part of the pop culture in today’s world’. said Karich
As a computer fanatic as well, Karich expressed part of his motivation was how important a role this machine played in the dawn of desktops saying “It’s also the first graphical user interface based computer, so honestly it’s a combination of multiple things”.
Along the road, Karich encountered many roadblocks while fixing the computer from cleaning the outer shell of the machine to the electrical wiring inside the case and behind the screen.
I have to say definitely discharging the CRT as It is I wouldn’t recommend it to anybody who is not tech savvy. The CRT or basically as people would call the old boxy screens which are based off of really high voltages and you need to discharge it, which is really dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing.” said Karich
The overall experience for Karich has been a project full of passion and knowledge.
“It could be a really dangerous process,A little tension in you when you’re trying to do something dangerous, but it has been pretty fine and it is probably the most difficult part but it has been also a learning experience too.” said Karich.
