As London gets set to complete its first full month of its green bin program many Londoners have had the chance to experience the bins with the city reporting over 150-thousand households in the city using them.
And now that Londoners have the opportunity to get acclimated with multiple cycles, many have opinions on the program as the city tries to catch up with the rest of the province.
When talking to people around London in person and online, the general consensus on the bins is that, there isn’t one.
There seems to be 2 main constituents in the green bin program so far. A lot of Londoners that are satisfied with the program so far usually agree that it makes their lives easier.
Some residents like Amanda say that her family loves the bin.
“We have less garbage now and the little bin is great to have around the kitchen during meal prep…It gets picked up weekly and we are happy with that.”
44-year-old Jules also doesn’t have any complaints with the program as of yet. “I love it. Way less garbage going out. Wish we had been doing this for much longer.”
And while Amanda and Jules may represent most Londoners who have positive feedback for the program, there’s also factions of users who aren’t as satisfied with green bins.
One issue people are having with the bins is the sheer size of the bins themselves. A lot of users who live in households with more people feel the bins just aren’t big enough.
While the size of the green bin is around the same size of the city’s recycling bins, that with the city’s bi-weekly garbage schedule has residents feeling it’s too small for larger or extended families.
Chris, who lives with his partner and newborn doesn’t appreciate the fact that you can’t put diapers in the green bins considering the garbage is collected bi-weekly.
“They’re alright kinda but too small. The problem’s the schedule. My trash is always full because i have a newborn. Now I gotta wait another week and double the amount? that’s stupidity.”
Owen also has a problem with the scheduling aspect of the garbage and bins.
“It’s so bad, it’s not enough to counter the amount of non food garbage a normal family makes. The city just made a non-problem an unnecessary one.”
And while some other opinions on the program came up, like the smell coming in the warmer months or the tax dollars used. The majority of Londoners have those 2 main takeaways on the program just over a month in.
As for any changes, the city has not announced any changes to the size, schedule of collection, the acceptation of pet or newborn waste or bags for the bins.
The city of London also has a submission link on their website where users can share their feedback and suggestions for the program which can be found here. https://service.london.ca/service-requests/report-garbage-issue/
