A team of researchers at Western University have found a way to stop and even reverse the effects of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
ALS is a debilitating neurodegenerative condition that leads to paralysis and death. The prognosis for the disease is 2-5 years.
“Importantly, this interaction could be key to unlocking a treatment not just for ALS but also for other related neurological conditions, like frontotemporal dementia,” says doctor Michael Strong, head ALS researcher at Western University.
The research has been funded by The Temerty Foundation with them pledging $10 million over the next 5 years.
“Finding an effective treatment for ALS would mean so much to people living with this terrible disease and to their loved ones,” says the founder of the Temerty Foundation James Temerty. “Western is pushing the frontiers of ALS knowledge, and we are excited for the opportunity to contribute to the next phase of this groundbreaking research.”
